People remember the state of the washrooms and read the whole operation from it. We tackle odour in the order that makes sense: at source first, then by neutralising it, and only then with a scent. It follows on from waterless urinals and water hygiene.
AIThis is not an impression. Perceived cleanliness is a described and measurable construct in the research literature — and one of its three components is freshness, which is to say odour.
A validated scale of perceived cleanliness distinguishes three components: tidiness, order and freshness. Freshness refers to the odour of the space. The scale was built for facility management — for real operations, not the laboratory.
A systematic review of 38 studies and earlier work agree that poor school toilets lead children to avoid them. Among older children, most report never having had a bowel movement at school — and sight and smell are named explicitly among the barriers.
Odour has long been among the most frequently raised complaints about public washrooms, and it feeds into the overall impression of the building and of the organisation running it.
Where this comes from. We rely on peer-reviewed work (the validated perceived-cleanliness scale, Vos et al. 2019; the systematic review of school toilets, Li et al. 2026; Lundblad & Hellström 2005) and on industry satisfaction surveys of washroom facilities. Where we cite industry surveys, we say that they are usually commissioned by suppliers of sanitary equipment.
What we do not claim. We do not use retail or hotel-lobby figures on how scent affects sales — they do not transfer to washroom operations. Nowhere do we claim that adding a scent by itself raises perceived cleanliness by any given percentage; what is evidenced is the opposite direction, namely that odour drags the rating down.
The same logic we apply to waterless urinals: odour is dealt with at source. Scent is the last step, not the first.

We design odour control around the operation — how many people pass through, how ventilation is arranged, and what condition the outlets and drains are in. The assessment is part of the audit we carry out at your site.
Technically we work with diffusion systems with no propellant and no aerosol — the scent is carried by oxygen from a fuel cell. An independent carbon footprint assessment (Carbon Footprint Ltd, 2026) puts the dispenser at 2.76 kg CO₂e (from raw material extraction to the factory gate) and the cartridge at 1.22 kg CO₂e (including disposal).
The honest answer is that odour control does not belong everywhere. Where caution is warranted, we say so up front.
Some people react badly to fragrances — from headaches to breathing difficulties; among people with asthma the share is markedly higher. That is why we propose low intensities, place the units away from where people linger, and in borderline settings recommend leaving odour control out altogether.
The scent refills are classified under chemicals legislation and have safety data sheets — we supply them with every product delivered.
Where a building is pursuing indoor-environment certification we proceed carefully: such standards track and limit volatile compounds, so dealing with the source and with ventilation stays the priority.
