Four things it rests on — and the four most often skipped when the change is done in a hurry.
The O‑ring is a wear part and it gets replaced at every removal. An old, hardened seal is the most common reason a joint drips after the change.
An aerator is tightened to a specified torque, not “as hard as it goes”. Overtighten and the housing cracks and the thread strips; undertighten and it seeps past the seal.
We clean the sealing seat and the thread in the tap itself. Limescale on the seat will defeat even a new seal — the joint will drip whatever we screwed into it.
Once fitted, we check every joint and measure the actual flow. The figure in the report does not come from a catalogue but from that particular outlet.
They are not ours — they follow from the standards and from physics. Where they are not met, we say so at the audit stage, not at the complaint stage.
It clogs with limescale and debris and the flow gradually drops. That is not a fault, it is the principle — which is why it can be replaced on its own, without touching the tap.
How fast an insert clogs depends on water hardness and on use. Sanitary tapware manufacturers agree on only a qualitative rule — "according to water hardness"; nobody guarantees a figure. Numbers such as "every six months" that circulate online come from plumbing practice, not from a standard and not from a regulation.
So we offer an annual service visit as the starting regime and adjust it after the first year according to what the measurements actually show. More often on hard water; on soft water, less may be enough.
The insert is taken apart into screen, seal and housing.
A citric acid solution, a soft brush and a thorough rinse in clean water.

Sanitary tapware manufacturers agree on this across brands. Aggressive chemistry does not only destroy the insert — it damages the tap finish too.

EN 806-5 states that responsibility for operating, inspecting and maintaining the system is governed by local and national rules, and requires that the information needed for correct operation and maintenance be available. The service record we keep forms part of that trail — but it does not replace your duty under those rules.
Non-aerating laminar inserts instead of aerating ones, and replacement to a schedule rather than to condition. The reason is aerosol and stagnation, not saving water.
